Tay Valley Family History Society invites people from all over the world to join its membership, and welcomes enquiries about ancestry in the whole area around the River Tay. They cover the whole of the environs of the Tay, including parts of Fife and Perthshire as well as the whole of Angus.
The Society has an enormous resource of records and information, and volunteers who have collated their own research and that of other people, resulting in a pool of information which is unparalleled in the area. The group offers some limited Research Services for members of the society. Payment for any of these services should be made in advance and can be made by several means including a secure on-line payments facility.
TVFHS offer lookups in the Old Parish Registers (OPRs) and Statutory Registers of Births, Marriages & Deaths. Before such requests for assistance can be dealt with the member should provide a name, a date, an event (birth, death or marriage) and a place (parish or district). A transcript (not a photocopy) of all the details on one relevant certificate can be provided for members at a cost of £5.00 (five GB Pounds), or if the event is before 1855, the relevant entry from the Old Parochial Register can be provided at a cost of either £2.00 (two GB Pounds) or £5.00 (five GB Pounds) depending on where the event took place. If only an approximate date or place can be provided, we can search +/- 5 years for a further fee.
TVFHS offer lookups in the 'Soldiers Died' CD ROMs at £2.00 (two GB pounds) per entry. We plan to extend this service to other Library resources in due course.
The group are happy to undertake a limited amount of other basic research for members. All research is carried out by volunteers and is confined to the sources available in the Research Centre or in the Dundee locality. TVFHS will not research complete family trees, and will not search for living relatives. They can provide a list of professional researchers for more specialised or wide-ranging searches. The charge of 5.00 (five GB Pounds) per hour is made for all research carried out on behalf of a member. Such charges are paid into the Society's funds.
Manuscripts & Archives are not on open access. However access may be permitted following a written request to Grant Buttars at the Research Centre.
