Free Golf for Montrose Schoolchildren RMGC Bicentenary Schools Golf Competition

Royal Montrose Golf Club has launched a competition for Montrose school pupils with great prizes for the winners, and a free golf lesson and one year's free junior membership of the club for all entrants.

"This competition will help the young people of Montrose discover their town's 500 years of golfing heritage while also introducing them to the game at an early age, ensuring the local passion for golf continues through the generations," said Harry Faulkner, Royal Montrose Golf Club's Bicentenary Convener.

The competition was launched at Lochside Primary School in Montrose. After presenting an overview of Montrose's golfing history to primary 6 and 7 pupils, Harry invited them to enter the competition - an invitation which was much appreciated by the pupils, many of whom already play golf.

Harry explained that the competition is for pupils at primary schools in the Montrose area who are in primaries 6 and 7 or at Montrose Academy. "Montrose was the home of the world's first junior golf club, which was established at Montrose Academy about 20 years after the 1810 founding of the Royal Montrose Golf Club so it is very fitting for us to hold a competition for local school pupils," continued Harry, who added that the competition is jointly-sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline and McCain Potatoes.

"This is an excellent opportunity for the youngsters of the town," said Martin Milloy, Primary 7 teacher at Lochside Primary School. "Judging by the enthusiasm shown by the pupils who attended the launch, I suspect there will be a lot of entries to this competition."

Royal Montrose Golf Club's schools competition is part of the Club's 2010 Bicentenary Celebrations, which are supported by Angus Council through Carnoustie Country, which promotes the golf courses in and around Angus.
